I dont understand why you make all these novels while reading garmindevice.xml gives all the needed info about naming and paths lol.
Only additional rule to keep in mind is: deselect routable maps covering the same area of the map you are using in gps.

    Spoiler: see in my 34xx

I did look there but I'm not smart enough to figure it out. Jim

Tiger555, Here's what I ended up with on the Sd card
sd:\Map\garmintopo which is the Garmin Topo USV100. A gmapsupp.img file
sd:\Map\*.img which are the Idaho Topo files. These are individual img files so they won't go into a single folder
sd:\Garmin which contains the Garmin Lakes gmapsupp.img file

So what's showing up in myMaps on the unit is
CN North America NT 2017.10 All. This is checked
Topo U.S. 100K v5 unchecked. Thanks to smokefree's explanation I understand why this is now
    Lus100f checked
Lus100f checked ( I understand why these are split now also)
All the Idaho Topo maps but as individual image files
    So far so good.
Now in order to view say a topo map I have to uncheck CN North America correct? Then check Topo US. Do I have to be in the actual Topo area (on the ground) in order to see the details on the unit? Would I also have to be on a lake to see the details of that lake? Jim

Mostly if the topo is routable yes, if it's not routable it depends on topo map (in devices, especially outdoors, may depend on map transparency, drawing priority and on choosen profile in device)

No, if gps shows the map,you can browse it tapping and zooming to see details.
